About Our School

Tazewell-New Tazewell Primary School (or TNT as we call it) opened in the fall of 1974. We are a K-4 school located in Claiborne County in North East Tennessee. Our student population this year exceeds 550 students. There are 45 professional staff and 40 support staff. Our school hours are from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We serve breakfast and lunch daily.
 

School Composition

Classrooms are as follows:

  • 7 Kindergarten
  • 6 First Grade
  • 7 Second Grade
  • 6 Third Grade
  • 6 Fourth Grade

Our enrichment classes consist of Art, Computers, P.E., Library, Compass Lab and Guidance. Each student participates in these classes once a week.


SACS Accreditation

TNT staff and community collaborated during the winter and spring of 1997 toward accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. We received accreditation in December of 1997. Implementation of our improvement plan is ongoing. We were re-accredited in May 2002.


Technology

Over the past 4 years, our school has been awarded several grants thanks to the hard work of our grant writing team. Below is a list of grants awarded and a description of each.

  • LEAPs (Lottery Education Afterschool Programs) Grant
    Grant writers: Christy Evans and Tonya Cantrell
    Description: Our LEAPs program provides our students with academic and enrichment opportunities and tutoring that reinforce and compliment the regular school curriculum.
  • 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant
    Grant writers: Kathy Keck, Janet Barnard, Ann Bowling, Tonya Cantrell and Christy Evans
    Site Director: Tonya Cantrell
    Description: This grant includes a morning program, afterschool program, and summer program. The morning program is one hour before school and allows participants come in early to work on homework and have breakfast. The afterschool program allows participants to stay 2 hours after school each day to work on homework, reading and math. Participants are also able to see an onsite doctor for free one day a week. The summer program is four weeks in length, taking place during the month of June. The school day lasts from 8am until 4pm, and participants are served breakfast, lunch and snack. Classes are taught just as they are during the regular school year. During the summer program, the students have special treats each Friday, including some field trips. Transportation to and from the school is funded by the grant.

  • Reading Excellence Act
    Grant writers: Janet Barnard, Tonya Cantrell, Kathy Keck, Jody Kennedy, Valerie Lovin, and Kim Turner
    Description: This grant was written to improve student reading acheivement. It provides the school a full time Literacy Leader who works with local day care centers and preschools to prepare students for Kindergarten from birth to 5 years old. The grant also provides a summer K-1 transition program and afterschool tutoring for grades 2 and 3.

  • Comprehensive School Reform Grant
    Grant writers: Tonya Cantrell and Jody Kennedy
    Description: This grant was used to purchase academic programs to enhance student test scores in the areas of reading, language and mathematics. The four components of this grant are Core Knowledge, Scientific Learning, Reading Renaissance, and Compass Learning.

  • Tennessee Goals 2000 - Heads Up Reading Language and Math
    Grant writer: Peggy Thornton
    Description: This grant ($14211) was used to purchase Compass Learning software program, a supplemental computer curriculum, which will help improve our scores in reading, language, and mathematics.

  • Tennessee Goals 2000 - Project ITFITS
    Grant writer: Tonya Cantrell
    Description: This grant ($78400) was used to purchase new computers and a new server for our school, replacing several obsolete computers in our classrooms.

  • Tennessee Technology Grants (1998-2000)
    Technology Grant Coordinator: Tonya Cantrell
    Grant writers: Any teacher was eligible to participate
    Description: Teachers participated in writing and submitting online units. When the units were approved, they received money to spend on technology for their classrooms. The teachers used these funds to purchase digital cameras, scanners, computers and learning software.

    Community Service

    Community service has become an important part of TNT's program. One of the actions we selected for our Improvement plan included each grade developing a project to serve our community. The projects for this year included the following:
  • Recycling our plastic at TNT
  • Collecting food for the Hunger Ministries This year we hope to expand our community service efforts.



    Banking

    Every Monday, our students get an opportunity to do banking with Citizens Bank's "Save for the Future" program. Kathryn Love or the "Bank Lady" comes to our school. Students are allowed to make deposits into their saving accounts.
