The communities of Tazewell and New Tazewell are in Claiborne County, Tennessee. We are located in the beautiful mountains of the Cumberland Gap area. Cumberland Gap is located where Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia meet.

Community Facts

Claiborne County is a rural county with a population of 28,828. The county covers 2400 square miles. Tazewell, the county seat, is located about 40 miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee. Along with our beautiful mountains we have beautiful Norris Lake with 850 miles of shoreline. Norris Lake was the first T.V.A. lake built in the late 1930's. The lake is fed by two large rivers, the Clinch and the Powell. The lake is enjoyed by fisherman and water lovers of all ages.

Some of the larger communities in the county are Tazewell, New Tazewell, Harrogate, Speedwell, Authur, Forge Ridge, Midway, Springdale, Cumberland Gap, Cedar Grove, Dogwood Heights, and Lone Mountain.

Points of Interest
Cumberland Gap is a natural opening in the mountains made famous by Daniel Boone. The Indians used this path long before Boone arrived. Today, you can visit the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and enjoy the history and beauty of our area.
For many years highway U.S. 25E passed over the Gap to Kentucky. That road is closed now and the park service has restored the wilderness to the way it was in 1790. In place of the road over the gap we now have The Cumberland Gap Tunnel, which opened in 1996. The tunnel travels under a mountain and is about a mile long.

Industry

Higher Education
Lincoln Memorial University is located in Claiborne County. LMU is a small private college with an enrollment of about 2000. Along with its undergraduate program, LMU also offers graduate programs in business and education. The Abraham Lincoln Museum is located on it's beautiful campus.

Walter State Community College has an extension in New Tazewell. It is located in the Rockwood Shopping Center. The main campus is located in Morristown, Tennessee.

Tusculum College is located in Greeneville, with extension campuses in several locations, including Morristown. Tusculum is a small private college with special degree programs tailored towards working adults.
